The American College of Physicians has honored the New Jersey Chapter with the presigious John Tooker Evergreen Award, one of only six awarded for 2020.

The John Tooker Evergreen Awards Program provides recognition and visibility to chapters that have successfully implemented programs to increase membership, improve communication, increase member involvement, enhance diversity, foster careers in internal medicine and improve management of the chapter.

The New Jersey Chapter received a 2020 John Tooker Evergreen Award for their initiative, the Community Outreach Project.

The Membership and Diversity Committee of the ACPNJ promotes volunteerism and community service and urges members to volunteer in their communities. In 2018/2019, the Committee, with the support of the Resident Council, developed a formal initiative aimed at the state’s residency programs and officially launched the ACPNJ Community Outreach Project. All the state’s IM Residency programs were invited to participate. Programs were asked to identify needs specific to the community they served and develop an outreach/community service project based on their assessment of their local needs.
Programs were permitted to create projects in conjunction with the ACGME Clinical Learning Environment requirements. The Committee developed a guidance template/abstract submission form, providing guidance on how to identify a problem, how to create a problem statement, and how to determine the project goal. Participants were invited to register their project with ACPNJ for an opportunity to present their work at the 2019 ACPNJ Scientific Meeting. Ten Residency Programs participated and presented the results of their project at the meeting.

The Membership and Diversity Committee of the ACPNJ committee defines itself by promoting service to the community. They recognize that as physicians, they have a responsibility to improve the lives and communities in which they serve, which was the goal of this project.
